The Place

The Main House

A traditional Courtyard House and architectual Gemstone

Situated on the highest point of an active tea plantation, Niyagama House was created and built by the German architect and yoga teacher Elke de Silva and her Sri Lankan husband Chaminda. By combining modern elements with traditional Sri Lankan design, it is an absolute architectural highlight. After two years of construction it opened its doors for guests in December 2012.

Five generous rooms and two double or twin suites are equipped with high quality furniture and luxurious bathrooms. From every room you have a wonderful view into nature and four of them offer a private balcony. The peaceful location makes it a perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

In just 20 minutes by tuktuk you can easily reach the coastal city of Galle, the historic, charming Galle Fort and the southern beaches of the Indian Ocean. Many of our guests love to "retreat" back into nature after a day of sightseeing. The distance to the airport of Colombo is 130 km, which is just a 2 hours drive via the new highway.

The Yoga House

Three new Rooms and a beautiful Yoga Shala

After the yoga room in our main house got too small for all our wonderful yoga guests, we decided in 2019, “against all odds” of the year and the ones to come in spring 2020, to start with designing and building our “second baby”: the Yoga House.

Three new beautiful double or twin rooms with high wooden ceilings and big balconies facing the sunrise, the tea plantation and tropical nature will be ready from December 2020 onwards. Just next to a spacious yoga shala for up to 25 yogis.

From December 2020 onward Niyagama House can cater for up to 25 guests and we do look forward to welcome groups with their own teachers. Still there will be enough space and always the amazing tranquility of our place for everybody to enjoy.

The Pool and Garden Area

Chlorine-free Water and shady Trees

Our beautiful garden surrounds the entire main house. Here tropical flowers are growing, a small organic herbal garden is taken care of and you can observe monkeys playing in the trees of the tea plantation around the garden in the early morning hours.

The "jewel of the garden" is the large and chlorine-free pool (9m x 18m / 29 by 59 feet), purified with an eco-friendly copper-silver-ionization method. Swim a few sportive laps or for just chill in the shallow areas.

Take a Walk through

Tea, Cinnamon and Pepper Plants

The nine acres plantation (36.500 qm) is spreading around the garden. Tea picking ladies harvest the new tender tea leaves daily, and these are collected by the tea factory truck in the evening.

Enjoy our guided plantation walk or explore by yourself. Pick our binocular and explore the variety of beautiful birds.

Or take a seat on one of our “meditation spots”, gaze into the relaxing greenery and be happy with doing nothing.

Sustainability

Being sustainable as much as possible. Our eco-friendly approach stretches from our kitchen through the house into the garden, the pool and the plantation:

Organic, locally sourced food ingredients whenever possible
Metal straws and glass bottles instead of plastic ones
Solar power for hot water
Photovoltaic for electricity
Training of our staff in "re-fuse, re-use, re-cycle"
Passionately and constantly planting herbal and fruit trees throughout the tea plantation to give birds and bees a home.
